Arts Integration: Engaging with Creativity

Here are 4 diverse ways to incorporate fine art into any curriculum:

Making words more visual has a profound effect on learning and remembering the material.

Visual students have a tendency to draw out notes in any class and sometimes get admonished for their doodles rather than being reinforced for visualizing the material.  Encouraging students to create sketch-notes and modeling sketch-noting as an educator can be a very effective and simple way to incorporate arts into any curriculum with great positive outcomes.

Drawing out you notes helps separate the important takeaways from the page making it easier to see the most important learning and allowing educators to understand how the material is being processed rather than just copied.

The sketch-notes above are some of my examples but here are a few links to other examples and demonstrations available on the web:

  • Smashing Magazine- How to Get Started with Sketchnotes

  • Core77- The Basics of Visual Note Taking

  • Roh Design- Mike Rohde Sketchnotes

  • Pinterest- Explore Sketch-notes

  • Using paintings, drawings, illustrations, photographs, sculptures, and architecture to underscore material is a great way to incorporate the arts into any curriculum.  Math teachers around the world have long been using artists like MC Escher in class and science and social studies teachers can easily visualize material with Davinci's notebooks.

Art history is a great tool but the issue is often finding the right art and artists to use in class so I suggest asking the art teachers in your school or local museums.

Here are a few of my favorite examples of art history references that can be used as examples for the core subjects:

Science: Damien Hirst, Leonardo DaVinciDaniel GoldsteinZahner Company

Math: Tony RobbinMC Escher, Piet MondrianAlbrecht Dürer

English/Language Arts: Lewis CarrollBilly Collins, United States of PoetryAubrey Beardsley

Social Studies: Ai WeiweiGilbert Stuart, BanksyOliver Jeffers

Asking students to illustrate concepts and ideas can lead to some powerful learning and connections. I made an artistic leap in high school when my English teacher offered an option to draw a piece based on the book that we were reading rather than write an essay.  Here are a few great examples of illustrations for different subjects:
This student drawing references World War II and incorporates what was learned in an original way.

A student pen and ink illustration of a massacre in China.

This mini-comic book is based on graphic novels that students studied in English class.

They are created with just one piece of paper that is folded into 8 pages that becomes a piece of micro-fiction.

Using inexpensive and recycled materials like cardboard, tape, and glue students can create 3D visualizations of what is being learned in any discipline:

It can range from a short day long activity to a longer, collaborative project that results in a cardboard sculpture to decorate the classroom and reinforce what was learned:

For inspiration look at an artist like Wayne White who we learned in my studio art class and who inspired us to create 3D works of famous artists in class:

The advent of 3D printing also allows students to create 3D designs easily that are virtual using apps like Morphi and Tinkercad among others.

Here are 4 diverse ways to incorporate media art into any curriculum:

I love using Vine to introduce my students to how we can use video in class.  Here are a few examples of demonstrations and visual illustrations of lessons:

Once you master the basics of creating and sharing these videos you can pair Vine with other iphone apps such as Replay and Hyperlapse allowing time-lapse and text:

Animation is an incredible resource for education.  There are various techniques that range from simple demonstrations using time-lapse to animated sketch-notes to complete digital animations that aid students in understanding curriculum in school in a different way.  The example below is a terrific TED talk by author Dan Pink that was animated as sketch-notes by the RSA and it really communicates his ideas is a clear way:

Here'a an example of a collaborative animation that was created in class with each student drawing one aspect of author Stephen Fry's essay:

If educators don't have time to create that kind of animation they can always pair a short animation with Vine for a demonstration or showcase of student work.  This can be done in just a few minutes, here are a few of my examples:

It's also possible to work with an outside educational entity like my friends at Art Heroes who created this amazing visual animation showing the basics of design:

There's no question that social media is fast becoming a major part of our future so it really makes sense to utilize it as a way to communicate ideas, teach, and incorporate the arts.  If educators don't have any experience incorporating the arts into the teaching why not use social media like SKYPE in the classroom, Twitter, and Google to connect and collaborate with an art class for a shared, interdisciplinary lesson.

I've had great success collaborating and incorporating visuals into lessons with other classes and schools from around the world.  Here's an example from a Japan Society partnership with a class from Japan paired with my class in NY:

This kind of activity also adds another layer of cultural understanding but social media also allows opportunities that wouldn't be possible otherwise such as Mystery SKYPE's and Google Hangouts with professionals in the field.  I had the opportunity to have my students interview actor and musician Nick Cannon in school a few years ago and the conversation ranged from bullying to the arts.

There are other ways to use video to incorporate the arts into different disciplines like the example below of a video poem.  Visualizing writing adds another dimension to the words and allows the writing to be shared and enjoyed in a new way.

Student created public service announcements such as this example created with our school improvement team are another great example of how educators can use video to communicate to the school and community.

Video is also great as a tool for student reflection that can be shared with future classes.  I edited together some of the short student reflections with examples to create the video below that shows what we do in class and gives future students, colleagues, parents, and the community a better idea of what is happening in my classroom.

There are also great free educational resources to use such as PBS Learning Media which offers videos, lesson plans, and assessments that are catered to various disciplines:

    Studio Art: Artist Trading Cards

This week we are going to learn about and create Artist Trading Cards that will be exchanged with other students from states around the US as well as countries from around the world. The video above shows some ATCs that I created with fellow art teachers around the world this summer as part of a daily art challenge called #TERPart (The Everyday Renaissance Project). Well be participating in the Mini Matisse ATC exchange so you can take a look at some examples of the work done so far as well as some suggestions from the organizer, teacher Nic Hahn. You can see a sample of how many different states participated in the ATC exchange last year on the map below: You can create any kind of art in most any kind of medium (as long as it can be mailed and wont ruin other cards) on the front of the card as long as it's appropriate for all ages (some of our cards might be exchanges with elementary and middle school students) but on the back be sure to include you should write your name, school, location (city, state, & country) and my name (Mr. Needles). Below are a few examples of cards from last years trade:

    Wyland National Art Challenge

This week we will begin our work on the Wyland National Art Challenge, a mural painting and photography contest which is due in December.  World-renowned environmental artist, conservationist and muralist Wyland is inviting classrooms across the United States to take part in the 4th Annual Wyland National Art Challenge, a nationwide environmental mural and individual art contest with the theme of conservation. The contest begins Oct 1., 2016 and runs through Dec. 1, 2016. Teachers are invited to create with their students a 4-foot by 8-foot (or larger) mural painting to celebrate how conservation shapes our lives and our world.
Each student in Studio Art and AP Studio Art will create a mural design this week for this year's theme of conservation and then we'll critique the strengths of of the designs based on the creativity, communication of the concept, and the quality of the art to choose which design will become the basis for the class mural.

    Ask A Curator Day

Today on Twitter it's "Ask A Curator" day so we will be asking question of museum curators in each class.  The museums and curators we choose will be relevant to what we learn about in class but it is a terrific opportunity to use social media to talk to successful professionals in the art and media world.  I will be asking the questions through my twitter account after we formulate questions as a class and in the advanced classes each student has chosen a museum that interests the to research and ask questions of.  Here is the list of participating museum today but there are over 1300 museums from 53 countries around the world so I will help us narrow down relevant museums to talk with:

    Photography: The First Week

In Photography last week we created ten photos documenting the first week of school and began editing them using Adobe Photoshop.  This week we are going to take 3 of our favorites and put them together like my demonstration example above to create a triptych.  The final triptych will be due on Wednesday digitally in class.

    Remembering September 11

Yesterday was the 15th  anniversary of the September 11 attacks so well take a moment to look at two short films from StoryCorps animated by The Rauch Brothers of two very personal stories from that day.  The first about John and Joe Vigiano (a firefighter from West Islip and a police officer from Medford) and the second about Michael Trinidad (who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald).

I had a chance to visit the memorial and see the tribute in light in lower Manhattan from Brooklyn yesterday.  I was teaching the morning of September 11 and some of the students I had lost parents that day.

    Studio Art: Zentangle doodle drawing

In Studio Art class we are beginning our first drawing using the Zentangle technique that in addition to looking really cool, helps relieve stress. The demonstration I did in class can be seen in the video above which is shown in time-lapse so you can see how it progresses over time. We will create the drawing in our sketchbook and include our first name somewhere in the image the add various patterns in the negative space. We will be drawing into next week and we'll look at the completed drawings on Wednesdays in class for a grade. Below are a few different examples of tangle patterns that you can incorporate if you get stuck-have fun!

Digital Media: Visit from the Creator of the Morphi App

We welcomed guest speaker Sophia Georgiou, the Creator of the Morphi App, in Digital Media class this week and learned about the amazing possibilities for 3D printing, design, and animation with the app as well as the fascinating process of how the app was designed.  It was a great opportunity to bring together all of our learning in design, coding, 3D printing, collaboration, and the creative process.

We learned about a few really cool features of the app and even created a great 3D model of the 'Mouse-fish' character from our recently completed collaboration mural painting with Jon Burgerman!

    Digital Media: Vexillological Augmented Reality

To begin working with Augmented Reality we are going to take a note from Roman Mars, host of the 99% Invisible (one of my favorite design podcasts), and work to create a better flag for our town, Smithtown.  We are going to watch his TED talk and learn about vexillology, the study of flags, and then critique our town flag based on the basic design rules that he shares written below.

    1. Keep it simple. (The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory.)
    2. Use meaningful symbolism.
    3. Use two to three basic colors.
    4. No lettering or seals. Never use writing of any kind.
    5. Be distinctive

Our flag is definitely what we learned Vexillologists would call a "SOB" (a seal on a bedsheet) so we are going to help our town out by creating a new flag design that represents the 21st Century.  We are also going to use the Quiver app to create a virtual augmented reality video show off how great our new flag designs would look flying over the school and in town.  Be creative, be original, and be timely because we are in the last few days of school and this project is due on Tuesday 6/2!

UPDATE: Here's a few of my favorite flag redesigns so far, there are some really great designs!

The last step of the project is to record your flag design with augmented reality with the Quiver app and their flag template and share it, below is an example from Jak.

    AP Studio Art: Summer Assignments

The 2016-2017 AP Art class will have a short meeting next Wednesday June 8 at 2:05pm in room 161 to discuss the schedule and summer assignments which are posted below. If you cannot attend for any reason make sure you see Mr.Needles and complete the 20 assignments by the first week of class because they are potentially a large part of the AP test itself.

If you have any questions about the assignments feel free to email me or come speak with me, other than that remember to enjoy the work and don't stress out because it usually means death to creativity!

    Summer Assignments:
All assignments can be done in any medium, technique and style you desire but should be entirely original (do not use other people’s pictures, characters, or content in any way) and fit the AP Test you are planning on taking (Drawing, 2D, or 3D).  Part I and II should be shared before August 1 if you want feedback and Part III can be shared when school begins.

    Part I: Breadth Assignments:
(these assignments should be shared with me via twitter instagram- #NeedlesAP or email tneedles@smithtown.k12.ny.us by August 1 at the latest for feedback. These works will also  be critiqued during the first weeks of classes.)
    1. Self Portrait (without showing your face)- The important thing here is to reveal something about yourself without using your face. In fact, you need not use any part of your body at all in this assignment. Instead, you are challenged to portray who you are in some alternative way. What image can you create or invent that would tell us something about you - your personality, your interests, your character, your inclinations, your talents, your passions, your obsessions, your desires, your needs, your likes and dislikes, your essence?

    2. Noir- Read the definition below and create a work that has a theme of noir in some way.
(adjective French: Black; noting the black numbers in roulette or the film noir style which incorporates deep shadows and a grim urban setting, photographed in somber tones and permeated by a feeling of disillusionment, pessimism, and despair.)

    3. Man vs. NatureCreate a work showing the contrast between man and nature. This too can be personal or social (environmentally, philosophically, ect) and literal or figurative. Try to stay away from the cliché imagery and find a unique take on a very ancient theme.

    4. Inspiration- Take a look at this list of NYC East Village Artists from Art.sy and choose any artist that intrests you then create a piece responding to (not copying or in their style) their work.  The list includes everyone from artist who use traditional media such as: Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring to artist like: Jeff Koons, Doze Green, and David Wojnarowicz who do mixed media pieces.

    5. Shanti Peace Poster-  Create a 8"x10' poster for the Shanti Peace Poster Contest, the theme is peace and you are free to use quotes from Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and/or John Lennon if you wish. Here's a link to the three previous winning Smithtown designs: 2011 Peace Poster

    Part II: TERPart:
Create 5 works from prompts of The Everyday Renaissance Project.  There is a creative prompt for each day in June so choose 5 that interest you and create work for them.  If you want to share them on social media use the hashtag share them with #TERPart.

    Part III: Concentration Assignments
Create 10 works in a theme of your choice in a medium that you want to work with for the AP test (pencil, photography, mixed media, ect.). Examples from the past include "A Day In The Life", "A Reinterpretation of the Past through Steam technology", "and "Perspectives of the Brooklyn Bridge" so it's really wide open but if you want to run your idea past me before you begin I'd love to hear it. Here's a link to the College Board website which has information about the test with examples of Concentration pieces that have scored well in the past: AP: Studio Art.

    Part IV: Contests
The Young Arts art contest is open and I suggest submitting work for a chance to win a large scholarship and a chance to attend their renowned master classes with well know artist and become eligible for nomination as a US Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
