French people sewn into dead horses.

I went into the city yesterday to see Steph Wowk receive her Scholastic medal. It was awesome! Steph came out on the stage of Carnegie Hall striking a pose- she managed to make herself standout among standouts. It was really great. Chuck Palahniuk (the author of Fight Club) made the keynote address and told this insane story about being sewn inside dead horses naked as a metaphor for how much you have to fight to make it in the world. It was really a cool event.

I stopped off at the prom last night and saw Blair and Gina burning up the dance floor. I'll miss you guys have a great summer!

Welcome new AP Art students!

Hello and welcome to all the new AP art students out there. This blog will be our interface for the summer and throughout next year so take some time to get acquainted with how it works. Once you have an account please write a post introducing yourself to the class (you can upload a picture or a work of art as well using the photo icon on blogger). Here's my introduction.

Hello I'm Mr. Needles. I've been teaching art, design, and film for ten years. I also work as a freelance artist, writer, and educator throughout the year. I like coffee, music, art, culture, traveling, and more coffee when it's available. You can take a look at some of my work on my website: www.timneedles.com

AP Art Summer Assignments

The summer assignmnets for next year's AP Studio Art class are listed below. Remember these assignments will count as grades for the first quarter of class next year. Feel free to post them on the blog as you work and I will give you input along with the other students. If you have any questions about the assignments or the class you can email me anytime. I'll be traveling all summer working with Adobe but I'll try to get back to you as quickly as I can.

Assignment #1:
Sketchbook Work
This assignment can be done in any media but the sketchbook pages should be complete. First you must create 10 Sketchbook pages based on themes that you are interested in pursuing for your concentration. In addition you must create 10 Sketchbook pages based on observation from life.

Assignment #2:
Create a work based on the theme of Isolation vs. Embrace
Use any materials to create your work but make sure it is 28” x 20” or smaller.

Assignment #3:
A Portrait of Somebody Else
This is strictly a 2-D assignment and can be done in monochrome or in color using any medium you desire. The style may be handled in any way you wish: realistic, abstract, expressive, impressionistic or cubistic, etc. It’s your decision. (Note: select the style of your favorite historical artist to use in this assignment.)
This portrait should reveal something significant about the model. Hands, torso and face are important features and should be included in the work. Try an unusual surface. The portrait may be done on any flat smooth unbreakable surface such as cardboard, mural paper, plywood, masonite, plexiglass, homasote board, etc. It’s up to you. The portrait cannot be smaller than 16”x 20” and no bigger than 22” x 28”.

This is strictly a 2-D assignment! The landscape must show depth and distance (receding space or informal perspective). The landscape can be done from any angle (bird’s-eye view or worm’s-eye view). Overlapping and repetition helps to create a sense of depth and distance. NO OUTLINES PERMITTED IN NATURE! Emphasize dark and light shapes, textures and space. Be sure to obtain a strong contrast!!! The landscape must be done in color. Any medium you wish - paint, collage, mixed media. The landscape must be done on a flat, smooth, 2-dimensional surface. Minimum size: 18” x 24”. All landscapes must have a foreground, middle ground and background. Lighting is important and should be dramatic!
