Welcome to 2020! I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year! We'll spend the first two days of the school year focusing and setting goals for the remainder of the year and reflecting on what we've done so far! Our Artist Trading Cards are now all sent out so we will be receiving the last few packages back shortly.

Today we'll learn a bit about author Dan Pink and what motivates us as people and author Jon Gordon who came from Smithtown and introduced the One Word idea!

Digital Media: What's Your Sentence?

In Digital Media well be talking about the work of author Dan Pink and using his concept of "What's Your Sentence?" to create part of our short animated film.  Step one is to think about yourself in the distant future and imagine something you want to have done by then- once you arrive at that idea write it in sentence form as if you've already done it.

Next we'll watch part of his TED talk which was animated by the RSA shown below and discuss what motivates us as people.  Write down something that you think would help motivate you to do your best.  We'll take some of this information and apply it to our class this year.



Finally our first homework assignment is to take 4 photos from your experience during the first week of school.  We'll use them to create a short video montage next week in class.  Make sure you have the photo's in digital form by Tuesday in class.

The First Day of School

Welcome to the first day of school at Smithtown East High School.  We'll begin with a piece of advice from author Dan Pink.  Today we'll start with a short fun collaborative art activity and go over some of the basics of class.  Below are the supplies you'll need for class:

Studio Art:
- A 8 1/2" x 11" Sketchbook
- Pencils/ Colored Pencils
- A Folder

Digital Media Art:
- A USB digital drive (1 GB minimum)

AP Studio Art: (Depending on which AP test you are taking
- A 8 1/2" x 11" Sketchbook
- Pencils/ Colored Pencils/ Paints/ ect.
- A USB digital drive (3 GB minimum)

Drawing:
- A 8 1/2" x 11" Sketchbook
- Pencils/ Colored Pencils
- A Folder

Japan Society's Going Global Exchange

This week we are participating in Japan Society's Going Global program and we will collaborate with students in Japan, Pakistan, the United States, and Iceland.  We will begin with two short questions:

1. What's Your Sentence? (take a look at the video above for context)

2. Who's your hero? (and why?)

Each student will answer both questions on a piece of paper then we will log on to the social network: http://goglobalsns.org/ and we'll share one of our answers.  We will then have a conversation about the different answers from each of the countries and what we have learned.

AP Art: What's Your Sentence?

 This week we started our first Going Global project with the Dan Pink "What's Your Sentence?" assignment in which students are asked to imagine what goals they would like to achive in their lifetime then write it in the future as if they've completed it.  Here are two examples from Clay (above) and Brianne (below).
