Wyland National Art Challenge

We will be participating in the Wyland National Art Challenge this month in conjunction with National Geographic and the entries will be due on December 1st, 2019. The theme of the Art Challenge is conservation, especially water conservation. Teachers are invited to encourage their students to explore today's environmental landscape and participate in a classroom mural contest, as well as an individual art, and photography contest. Digital images of your artwork are submitted for judging, not the actual artwork. Images will be uploaded to wylandfoundation.org/artchallenge/ beginning October 1st.

Three areas to win: 1. Classroom Mural: Work together as a class to create a 4-foot by 8-foot (or larger) mural. Three classrooms will win $500 for art supplies. 2. Individual Art Supporting the Class Mural: Individual pieces of art, in any medium, supporting the theme of the class mural. One 11th or 12th-grade student will win a $500 scholarship. Additional winners from each grade level will receive a $50 gift card for art supplies. (mural participation not required for individual art entries) 3. Individual Photography: Capture a moment of nature. One 11th or 12th-grade student will win a $500 scholarship. An additional winner will win a $100 gift card. For our research in advance of the mural will will incorporate the National Geographic framework and answer the following questions: 1. Why is there a need for water conservation (on Long Island, nationally, and globally) 2. What water conservation efforts are occurring on Long Island and what can we do to make an impact personally? 3. What aquatic life is impacted by the water issues locally (and globally)? We are going to draw out the answers using sketch notes we can use to help design our mural.

Wyland National Art Challenge

Congratulations to AP Art's Ilysa Sirota who was chosen as the Best in Grade Eleventh Winner for here painting 'Trapped' pictured above for this year's Wyland National Art Challenge.  

This year’s art challenge had participation from over 4000 students across the U.S. The contest encouraged students to explore the issues and wonders of conservation by painting classroom murals, individual works of art, and through photography. The Wyland Foundation hopes that the process of interpreting water-based habitats through art will lead students to a greater understanding of their role as future caretakers of our water resources.  

In addition to receiving a $50 Gift Certificate, her work is now featured on the home page of the Wyland Foundation

Tomorrow is the deadline for the Wyland National Art Challenge so anyone who created individual art or photo entries be sure to upload them to the website with all the relevant information before tomorrow at midnight.  The example above is a great one from Steph in the AP Art class.

Wyland National Art Challenge

This week we will begin our work on the Wyland National Art Challenge, a mural painting and photography contest which is due in December.  World-renowned environmental artist, conservationist and muralist Wyland is inviting classrooms across the United States to take part in the 4th Annual Wyland National Art Challenge, a nationwide environmental mural and individual art contest with the theme of conservation. The contest begins Oct 1., 2016 and runs through Dec. 1, 2016. Teachers are invited to create with their students a 4-foot by 8-foot (or larger) mural painting to celebrate how conservation shapes our lives and our world.

Each student in Studio Art and AP Studio Art will create a mural design this week for this year's theme of conservation and then we'll critique the strengths of of the designs based on the creativity, communication of the concept, and the quality of the art to choose which design will become the basis for the class mural.
