Digital Media- #TheGreatListen 2015

In Digital Media class we will be participating in the StoryCorps #TheGreatListen 2015 project as the final project in our audio unit.  Monday we watched StoryCorps founder Dave Isay's TED talk (posted above) in class that gave insight into the project along with some examples.

Today we will start preparing for our interviews with a worksheet, the free StoryCorps app, and a list of questions you can pull from along with some hints and advice.  The final recording is due on Friday November 20 so you have 3 weeks to create your interview.  I'll hand out a permission slip to everyone to sign but in terms of sharing and uploading your final interview it's your choice and not mandatory for the class.

Digital Media: Audio Part 2- Makers Approach to Instruments

Today in Digital Media class we will begin our 2nd project in our Audio unit in which the class will design and construct it's own instruments in small groups using the LittleBits Korg Modular Kit and makers materials.  We will actually use these instruments to record a short piece of music in conjunction with whichever instruments or vocals you want to contribute and the Keezy smartphone apps.  I'll be doing a short demonstration of how LittleBits works and then you will form groups and begin brainstorming.

Also as a reminder tomorrow in class is our reflection essays on the Technology Innovators and Entrepreneurs research project so don't forget to look over you notes and refresh your memory.  The extra credit assignment is also due at the end of next week (look back on the blog for instructions).

Advanced Media: Sound Editing

As a prequel to learning how to create short film documentaries we will focus just on audio and audio editing and work together to create some 30 second sonic IDs for the COWBIRD audio library. Today we will do some brainstorming around the themes of school, free time, and ambition and begin sharing our ideas and tomorrow we will begin recording and editing some of the ideas into short radio ids.  We'll be referencing Transom which is a great resource for audio techniques and storytelling tips and we'll go over the basics of editing sound with Audacity.
