Tomorrow is Burgermanday at Smithtown East! The National Art Honor Society will be collaborating together with artist Jon Burgerman on a school mural periods 5-9 as well as after school for the school courtyard. Here's a look at his process and a bit of what's he's about as an artist-it's an exciting project!
The project was made possible thanks to the Smithtown Childrens Foundation and the School Improvement Team. Here's a link to the new SIT Team blog I created to share the story of how the project came about: Smithtown East SIT

Art Honor Society: Burgerman Mural
A week from today artist Jon Burgerman will be visiting us at Smithtown East to collaborate on a mural together outside the school cafeteria. The National Art Honor Society will be painting alongside Jon after he creates an outline similar to the one above created at the AOL offices. It's an exciting opportunity and we'll be discussing the details in a short meeting next week to prepare for the mural!

Art Honor Society: Field Trip to the Met Museum
Yesterday the Art Honor Society joined the upper level Spanish students for a group field trip to the Metropolitan Museum in NYC as well as lunch at Azulejos.
We had a chance to stroll through the Modern and Contemporary sections checking out work from a number of the artists we learned about in class from Chuck Close and Alex Katz to Picasso and Van Gogh.
We also had a chance to see some of the work that won this years Scholastic Art Awards which gives some insight into what the expectations are for the awards.

Digital Media: 3D Chess Set Design
In Digital Media we are working on creating designs for our 3D Printed Chess collaborative set in Tinkercad. The pieces should be inspired by the traditional chess piece designs but you should add some creative, personal elements to your piece. Above is an example from Lucas who is working on designing a rook, he began by creating a traditional design with geometric shapes then started adding new elements. The final design should be both saved as a 2 part images like the example above with the class name and piece your designing along with a .stl file so it can be 3D printed.. Make sure that the elements of the design are all touching and there aren't parts that are too thin because they don't print well. The final design is due Monday April 11.

AP: Concentration
Today in AP Art our 7th Concentration Assignment is due and by now it should be evident that the art works as a larger, unified body of work. The AP Art test is the 1st Friday in May so there's not much time to waste at this point.

Digital Media: Typography
In class we have been working on a daily type design project so it's time to learn a bit more about Typography and the terminology that goes along with it. We learned some of the basic terms involved with type that you can review on our quizlet here- Typography terms
We will continue to create a letterform design each day until we have a full set and then we will digitize them and create a font. We will also learn a bit about the history of type to understand better where it might go next. Remember it's not just an alphabet we are dealing with its a living language that is constructed through design and usage.

Studio Art: Layering Painting
In Studio Art we are learning a process of layering acrylic painting and we are going to begin by building an interesting surface, covering it with writing then dry brushing over it in a complimentary color. The video above gives an idea of the process but we'll be adding our own personal touches throughout the process. This is not an assignment in which everyone should have a similar product at the conclusion but it's an individual creative process with suggestions and choices. I'll be doing demonstrations of each step as we progress this week-last week's demo is on Vine below.

Digital Media: Flextangles
In Digital Media we will be working with the STEAM projects Flextangles and taking them to the next level with digital media. The Flextangle template is in the assignment drive and we will use digital media such as digital drawing and photography to create our Flextangles in Adobe Photoshop. The completed Flextangle should have 4 separate lines of images that correspond like a kaleidoscope. We will design them then print and construct them as 3D objects. The final product will be due on Thursday April 7. Above is an example of what they look like and below is a video showing how they work from Babble Dabble Do.
