Art Honor Society: Field Trip to the Met Museum

Yesterday the Art Honor Society joined the upper level Spanish students for a group field trip to the Metropolitan Museum in NYC as well as lunch at Azulejos.

We had a chance to stroll through the Modern and Contemporary sections checking out work from a number of the artists we learned about in class from Chuck Close and Alex Katz to Picasso and Van Gogh.

We also had a chance to see some of the work that won this years Scholastic Art Awards which gives some insight into what the expectations are for the awards.

Chuck Close at Guild Hall

Guild Hall in East Hampton is currently showing a retrospective of the work of one of my favorite contemporary artists, Chuck Close, that is well worth a visit before it closes October 14.  The show has a variety of work including paintings, photographs, prints, and some amazing tapestries.
I was on hand for the Chuck's talk at the opening which is embedded below. He gave some great support to the arts in education as well as some terrific insight on his work and it's growth.

Chuck Close's show opening

Here are some highlights of Chuck Close's recent opening at Blum & Poe gallery in California from the Arrested Motion blog. We just learned about Close, who lives locally in the Hampton's and NYC, in our AP art class and the photography class, he's one of those few artists who are equally important in the painting and photography world.

Digital Wednesday: Mr. Needles and you...

www.timneedles.com

This week's assignment is a portrait trade. Create a portrait of me and I'll do a portrait of you and we'll post them both together in a show for the end of the year. There are a few great blogs that do this type of portrait trade (draw me, draw you, portrait party, et.) and it's a fun way to do a piece so lets give it a try here.
