AP Art: Whitney Biennial

The Whitney Biennial is currently on view in NYC from May 17–Sep 22, 2019 with artists using innovative techniques such as Ellie Ga's storytelling slideshow and Robert Bittenbender's sculptures.  we'll discuss some of the work in class as we explore new art this week.

Gallery Review: Wayne White

Wayne White is known for his playful and colorful word paintings and imaginative sculptures that transform his fun drawings into 3 dimensions so his latest exhibit entitled "I'M HAVING A DIALOGUE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND YOU'RE JUST SITTING THERE" at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC was well worth visiting.  I wanted to share a few of my favorite works as we have been studying White's work for the last few years and it consistently delivers with a unique, interesting sense of humor.

White's latest show was creatively exhibited with large cartoonist hands holding and displaying many of the paintings along with a really cool kinetic word sculpture resembling an old school weathervane.


The show was great but it felt a bit like an addendum to last years exhibit that was a bit more impressive with it's large scale sculpture and backroom installation.

Art and Media Art Honor Society- 2015 Induction

Today the Smithtown East chapter of the Art Honor Society and the Media Art Honor Society will hold their 2015 induction ceremony today in the little theater at 3:15 pm and we will also be presenting some of the senior art awards along with an pizza after party and gallery opening in room 161.

We had a great time on our field trip to the galleries in Chelsea last week so we'll also be putting together some of the photographs and video from the trip into our archives and talk about our favorite works..

Art and Media Art Honor Society field trip to MoMA & NYC

On Friday the Art and Media Art Honor Society had our annual field trip to NYC and this year we visited the Museum of Modern Art and the Henri Matisse's Cut Outs and Robert Gober's The Heart Is Not a Metaphor exhibitions along with the fantastic permanent collection.

The Matisse show was enlightening and it was great to see the pieces we've been studying up close along with background on how they were created but it was also very crowded!

AP Art: In Chelsea

There are a few terrific gallery shows in Chelsea NYC right now that I'd really suggest seeing.  The first is Wayne White who I've mentioned before who has a great show at Joshua Liner Gallery featuring 15 foot moving puppets of country musicians The Louvin Brothers made out of cardboard among other things.  He's always interesting, proof is in the trailer for the documentary about his life, Beauty is Embarrassing below!



Street artist DALeast is famous for his unique line quality and he currently has a gallery show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery on 23rd Street that I'd recommend seeing before it closes tomorrow.

There is also a great show of Brooklyn artist José Parlá's work at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery.  Parlá uses writing in a totally unique way and has teamed up with photographer JR who we've talked about in class. Check out the video below of how he works, pretty amazing!



While your there I'd suggest checking out the High Line walkway which is a great way to get around that area of town and features plenty of great art itself.  There is now a new section that just opened north of the galleries so it should be a great view over the river to New Jersey.

Studio Art: Banksy's residency in NYC

Banksy's "Better In Than Out" residency in NYC comes to a close this week so I took the opportunity to visit some of the works while they are still around.  I was lucky enough to have found the new Sunday Banksy painting in Greenpoint Brooklyn pictured above just moments after he posted it to his site and Instagram which is terrific because other street artists quickly tag or deface the pieces.  I also had a chance to see both the Waterfall truck and the Sirens of the Lambs truck at the Grim Reaper installation in the Bowery which was quite a scene.

Media Art Honor Society: Field Trip 2012

Today in Media Art Honor Society we will be reviewing our trip next week to the MoMA and 5 Pointz in NYC and the current exhibitions which include Edvard Munch: The Scream, Tokyo 1955–1970: A New Avant-Garde, Quay Brothers, and New Photography 2012.  We'll be discussing the specifics and attendance is mandatory for anyone attending the trip which once again leaves at 7:45 next Thursday!

Chuck Close's show opening

Here are some highlights of Chuck Close's recent opening at Blum & Poe gallery in California from the Arrested Motion blog. We just learned about Close, who lives locally in the Hampton's and NYC, in our AP art class and the photography class, he's one of those few artists who are equally important in the painting and photography world.
