Art Honor Society: Spring Field Trip to the Hamptons

The Art and Media Art Honor Society's annual spring field trip to the Hamptons was Friday and we had a great time visiting galleries and the Parrish Museum in Southampton despite the mediocre weather.  We had a chance to see art from notable Long Islanders such as Chuck Close, Dennis Oppenheim, Roy Lichtenstein, and a terrific exhibit of Jennifer Bartlett's work along with works from street artists such as: Banksy and Faile at Keszler Gallery and works by: Alex Katz and Ross Bleckner at Mark Humphrey Gallery.

 

 

Art Honor Society: Kevin Doria

Yesterday in our Art Honor Society meeting we were creating monoprints and we had a special guest Kevin Doria join us and participate.  Kevin is an alumni from Smithtown East's first AP Art class and he spoke about his current position as a photographer and graphic designer in New Mexico and about his college experiences at the Art Institute of Chicago.  Below are some of the prints Kevin created.  

Welcome new Art Honor Society members!

This wee we had our first meeting of the Art and Media Art Honor Society and we'd like to welcome all of our new members.  We had an amazing turnout with 70+ students so we'll be arranging some welcoming activities later this month to get to know everyone. 

The first items on this year's agenda is setting up volunteers for our 12th annual year at the Hampton's International Film Festival.  Students that are interested should fill out the volunteer request then email it to volunteer@hamptonsfilmfest.org.  We'll also be organizing our first field trip to Manhattan in October and putting together a haunted house for the Spooky Hallways Safe Halloween program in October so it'll be a busy month!

Chuck Close at Guild Hall

Guild Hall in East Hampton is currently showing a retrospective of the work of one of my favorite contemporary artists, Chuck Close, that is well worth a visit before it closes October 14.  The show has a variety of work including paintings, photographs, prints, and some amazing tapestries.

 I was on hand for the Chuck's talk at the opening which is embedded below. He gave some great support to the arts in education as well as some terrific insight on his work and it's growth.
