Digital Media: Creating a Grunge Filter
In Digital Media class we are learning how to create a Grunge Filter this week. Follow the tutorial above completely and submit the final piece in Google Classroom. Next week we will be taking original photographs and applying the filter to them. Make sure you pay close attention at the end and incorporate a layer mask to add the grunge effect to the type as well! Below is my example from the demonstration.

Remembering Architect I.M. Pei
Architect I.M. Pei, creator of iconic museum buildings such as the Louvre glass pyramid and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC as well as famed buildings such as the Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the John Hancock Tower and John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong passed away this week at the age of 102. His building were creative designs that attracted as much attention as the artwork inside them without detracting from the work so he's a terrific STEAM icon to study. You can learn more about his work and career in the short obituary below.

Each student should include a few basics points of information which can be found on the Google Classroom. The card should measure 2.5" x 3.5" and be an original design.

Inspiration for Portraits - Pakistan from The Memory Project on Vimeo.
In AP Art we are going to being working on a special test project with young people from Pakistan called The Memory Project. Each student will be given a photograph of a young person from Pakistan and have an opportunity to create a portrait. the video above gives some insight into their background but there will be some information about them in addition to their image which can be incorporated into the art. We will then send these children the portraits as a gesture.

Computer Art: Art Video Project
We are creating video art works for the Farmington Museum Gateway to Imagination 2019 Competition this week and we are starting with the sound. Create a 1-3 minute original soundtrack for you video so that we can later cut to the beat when editing. There are a number of free apps and websites that you can use to create original music such as Incredibox, Garageband, Figure, Audacity, and Finale which is on our computers already. The soundtrack is due on Monday but if you finish early you shoud start part 2 which is creating an animation to pair with the music.

Digital Media: STEAM innovations- Drones
In digital media class we have been learning about different STEAM innovations in 3D printing and virtual reality and here's a great example of an new innovation in drone technology. The story from NPR above shows how an international group of roboticists developed a drone with claws which can act like a bird to pause and watch without wasting battery power. It's a fairly simple solution to the problem of battery power usage which can limit the real viability of drones, very smart and maybe just a beginning?

As announced in our National Art Honor Society meeting yesterday our collaborative sketchbook project is currently on display at The Other Art Fair in Brooklyn's Expo Center. Because we are in the fair we can receive free tickets through the Sketchbook Project so if anyone is interested in checking it out, enjoy!
Celebrated for its unique and immersive visitor experience, The Other Art Fair Brooklyn is a delight and inspiration to art lovers with past features including hand poke tattoo experiences, immersive dining experiences, interactive art installations, 3D printing, virtual reality, restaurant and bar pop ups, and much more!
I had a chance to meet a number of interesting artists and check out some innovative art installations including a really cool VR art experience from Erin Ko which you can see in the trailer below.
There was also a project from Secret Project Robot shown below.
Below are a few more of the show highlights, I'll share more images and video this Thursday during National Art Honor Society!

Free Comic Book Day
Saturday is Free Comic Book Day so in addition to getting a few free comics there are opportunities to meet comic book artists and writers locally at shops like Fourth World, Newbury Comics, and Red Shirt Comics all of which participate. Below is a few of the artists and writers appearing in Smithtown at Fourth World, check their website for more information. It's a great opportunity to ask professionals some of those questions about design, drawing, and the real-world comic (and subsequent film) industry! Here's a preview of some of the free comics available from NPR.

Studio Art: Street Art Mural Competition
We are going to explore the world of Street Art next in studio art and design a mural for a competition in East Tosa neighborhood of Milwaukee.
We will begin by learning about a few prominent street artists such as SWOON (pictured above), OBEY,
and Banksy (pictured below) then explore different themes by looking at work from Miami's Wynwood Walls
as well as local street artists and their creative process.
Begin by using learn and match to familiarize yourself with the artists on our Quizlet- Studio Art: Street Art. Then we will see some of their process and history to see how we can design our own mural. The final designs will have some specific elements that should be included from the Google Classroom and it will be due on Friday May 10.
