AP Art: Long Island's Best competition for the Heckscher Museum

This Month we will be working on the Long Island's Best competition for the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington.  The Entry Forms must be completed in February and the work must be framed and deliver in person in March.  We'll review some of the museums art and discuss the process this week.

Studio Art: Interpreting a Master

In studio art the new assignment is to take one of the works from one of the artists we studied and create a interpretation of it using water color paint, pencils, and ink.  Above is a great example entitled from a work entitled Las Meninas- Diego Velázquez did the original on the left and Pablo Picasso did the interpretation on the right (one of 58 versions of the painting he did).  These are just closeups from the larger paintings which you can view in the links above but you can see that each artists style is unique even though they painted the same subject matter.

Extra Credit:
If you're interested in doing an additional interpretive piece you can get extra credit for creating a piece for the Heckscher Museum's contest entitled Young Artists in which you choose a piece from the museum that showed this year and respond to it artistically.  If you're interested look through their education website for more information and speak to Mr. Needles

AP Art: Portfolio Development

The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington has 3 upcoming PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT SERIES that is free for interested students.  The first is with my alma mater SVA and helps students arrange their portfolio and the send two have a number of colleges attending.  If your interested in more information call 631.351.3250 or check their website which is linked above.  If you happen to attend make sure you look around at the work such as the Stan Brodsky Retrospective (pictured above) and the Color show because we have an upcoming contest based on the work in the museum.

AP Art: 2013 Long Island's Best Show

Congratulations to Smithtown High School East's Gabby Lynn who's photograph was included in the Heckscher Museum's 2013 Long Island's Best Show.  Students from 49 high schools across Long Island submitted artwork for jurying and from the hundreds of submissions Curator Lisa Chalif selected only 80 for display.  All of the pieces were inspired by works shown at the museum and both the student work and the inspiration pieces will be on view at the museum until April 21, 2013.

AP Art: 2013 Long Island's Best

Congratulations go out to Gabby who's piece pictured above was chosen for the 2013 Long Island's Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum which will be on view March 30, 2013 - April 21, 2013!  Over the past 17 years, this program has grown to become a prestigious opportunity; it is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their artwork in an art museum.
