AP Art: Summer Programs

Last week in Art Honor Society we spoke about some of the different summer workshops that were available for high school students and here are links to 4 of the programs that I recommend and have witnessed.  All of the schools are very different and have pros and cons depending on your personality and interests so look into the details for a better sense and feel free to ask questions if you have any.  The cost ranges from$1000-$4000 depending on food, housing, supplies, college credit, and airfare but many of the programs have need based and art based scholarships as well.

College Visit: SCAD

Our first college visit of the year is this week with the Savannah College of Art & Design aka SCAD and they will be here in artroom 161 on Tuesday from 11:45am-2:00pm talking to students and reviewing work. I myself have visited and taken classes at SCAD a number of times and I really love the creativity and energy there as well as the design which seems to be present in everything from the school buildings which are often renovated from historic building to the classes.

Starting off with a SCAD Summer

Next week I'll be heading down to Savannah, GA to participate in some of the SCAD Summer art workshops along with some of my students.  I'm looking forward to spending the week being creative with drawing classes outdoors, children's book illustration, storyboarding, and figure drawing among others. The campus is pretty amazing, here are a few photos from my trip there last year.

Sean Apuzzo, a Smithtown Graduate

Sean Apuzzo, a Smithtown East graduate who is currently attending the Savannah College of Art and Design will be directing a ten-minute short film about a German Messenger on the front lines of battle during World War I and his film proposal is now up on Kickstarter. It's the story of a brave, artistic German soldier of WWI, who is cared for by French locals and finds love, but turns out to be someone unexpected. You can help fund the project for as little as a dollar but there are rewards for $50, $100, and other increments and in addition to helping support out alumni you'll be part of a film!

SCAD visit today

Today Michelle Garrigan, a representative of the Savannah College of Art & Design will visit our AP Studio Art class and give a presentation about the school and it's wide array of programs. I had a chance to visit the school in February last year and in addition to exploring their wonderfully designed facilities and eclectic classes I was able to attend their deFine Art exhibition and lecture with performance artist Marina Abramović which was amazing!
