Studio Art: Taking Notes from artist Wayne White

In Studio Art class we will be taking some notes from one of my favorite contemporary artists Wayne White and creating "oversize sculptured puppet masks" from cardboard, paper, paint, and glue in groups.  Each group will be given a famous artist from art history and they will have to work together to come up with a design and then build the puppet head.



The puppet masks will be featured in a few different local events such as the Art Honor Society's float for next years homecoming parade as well as the first Smithtown East art parade!  The artists we'll create masks for include greats such as DaVinci, Van Gogh, and Picasso as well as some more contemporary artists such as Banksy and Andy Goldsworthy.  The AP art class started a mask last week so here's a glimpse of what they look like in process!

Studio Art: Organic Sculpture

Today we will begin looking at sculpture specifically the earthworks (or land art) and organic sculpture movements with artists such as: Andy Goldsworthy, Maya Lin, Mel Chin, Christo and Jeanne Claude, Walter De Maria, Vik Muniz, Dennis Oppenheim, James Turrell,  and Robert Smithson. 

Well look at a local sculpture destinations such as Calder Court in the Smith Haven Mall and the Dia Art Foundation upstate in New York along with the Storm King Art Center which showcases works from sculptors such as: Alexander Calder, Mark di Suvero, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Richard Serra, and Louise Nevelson.

Studio Art: Cutie and the Boxer

Today we'll take a look Cutie and the Boxer, one of the 2014 Oscar nominated films for best documentary, and the artists it focuses on: Shinohara and his wife Noriko aka 'Cutie'.  We will continue reviewing the sculptors and designers starting tomorrow with a test on Thursday that includes Shinohara.

Studio Art- Artist Research Project II

To begin the second semester we will be researching artists who work in three dimensional art, sculpture, printmaking, and graphic design which are the major units we'll be covering.  Below is the master list of artists we'll be covering and just as we did last semester we'll have a test on them after the presentations.  Check the assignment drive to see which artist you've been assigned and complete a PowerPoint with 10 full slide images, 10 relevant facts, and a title page with the artists name, birth (and death) and your name and period by Friday 2/7.

Studio Art: Organic drawing and sculpture

Last week in studio art we did an earthworks project taking a note from artists like: Vik Muniz, Andy Goldsworthy, Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Smithson.  Above is an really cool example of a 3D earthwork from Allison in 7th period and below is an image from 4th period's outdoor ink drawing.

 

AP Art: Art from Books

Now that the AP Art test is over we are going to work on some creative things in class that we couldn't fit in before and our first assignment is to create a sculptural art piece from a book.  I passed out a number of 'decomissioned' books from the schools, titles from Shakespeare to Salinger, and each senior student should take a book and find a creative way to turn it into a sculpture.  It's better to have the sculpture relate to the book in some way so take a look and be open-minded.  The video above shows some amazing examples as well as Christine Antaya's book Book Art: Iconic Sculptures and Installations Made from Books but try to incorporate only parts of the books if possible (as well as glue, paint, and any other supplies you use).  The project will be due when we return from Memorial Day vacation so be creative and have fun!
