I hope everyone enjoyed the spring break holiday, we are going to get back into making art with a dive into surrealism based on my visit to The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. today we'll learn a bit about the art movement and the two main figures- Salvatore Dali and Rene Magritte and explore how they used images and psychology together. We will look at Dali's famous painting The Persistence of Memory and Magritte's The Empire of Light,in particular.
For our project we will be using a random image generator to supply us with a theme which we will then work with additional creative elements. In addition you'll each have one psychological element you need to incorporate along with at least 5 image pieces you can choose yourself.
In Studio Art our last assignment before spring break is another Illustration Friday assignment. In your sketchbook create a full color illustration for the theme- Imaginary Friend. Be creative and make sure to hand them in by today for full credit!
This years AP ART test is on May 10 which is just 24 Days away so make sure to stay focused on your concentrations to have all 12 ready, complete, photographed, and uploaded in time!
This week in Digital Media we will be creating and producing an original T-shirt design using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator together. Step one is to create an original design in Photoshop, then we bring it into Illustrator and vectorize it by using select all the Live Trace, the third step is to use our t-shirt template and arrange it, finally we'll export.
Thanks to all the National Art Honor Society members who helped build the first stage of our zen garden! The next stage will be done after spring break and consist of the painting and design elements on the walls and the sculptural aspects.
Digital Media will take the Adobe Illustrator Vocabulary Quiz today and hand in the first AI assignment. Make sure to study the class quizlet first! Next up in using Photoshop and Illustrator together to create t-shirt designs!
Today in National Art Honor Society we will begin creating our Zen Garden in the art courtyard. Above and below are examples of zen gardens created in schools that give an example of what it will look like when it's complete. Today we will start the foundation and try to have the first garden completed by the end of the month.
In AP Art we have 17 class days till the AP Exam so it's a good time to check in on our concentration portfolios and make sure everything is looking good before the spring break next week. Each student should have their first 8 pieces completed and turned in as well as the 9th almost ready at this point as it is due on Friday. We will go over the next steps in digitizing the art work and uploading them because we will also review and fill out the paperwork this Friday.
To start quarter 4 we are going to learn a new program, Adobe Illustrator. We will be using it to create 3 assignments this quarter including our t-shirt designs. It's similar to Photoshop but has some key differences so we'll begin by learning some of the terms with a quizlet. There will be a short quiz on the terms on Thursday so the learn, test, and match should be done by Wednesday. We will begin using Adobe Illustrator today in class with a Easy Beginner Tutorial (above). We will use the anchor point guide to assist drawing the character using the shapes and the shape builder tool. We will go nice and slow for brand new users of Adobe Illustrator can follow along in the classroom.
In Studio Art class we are going to create paper beaded jewelry. Each student should start by creating 30 colorful paper beads that we will turn into Paper Bead Jewelry. Above are a few examples of what is possible and you will have some freedom to be creative. Each student should create 1 paper bead bracelet and 1 additional piece (it can be an additional bracelet, a necklace, or earrings- any time of wearable art works).
Above is an example of the Paper Beads we created in class previously and below is a short tutorial video on how the process works, it's pretty simple. First you will measure and draw out your beads then color them then cut and assemble them. 30 Paper beads will be due by the end of class on Wednesday.
Today is the end of Quarter 3! Please make sure all classwork and assignments are handed in. We have a little under 40 class days left of the school year and it flies by!
This weekend I delivered our National Art Honor Society Sketchbook Project (Volume 14) "Songs We Love" and it is currently cataloged in the Brooklyn Art Library and Gallery. There will soon be a digital version online but congratulations to all the artists who took part this year, the final book looks terrific! In addition to the art I put together a online playlist of all the songs we illustrated in order on my YouTube page here: Sketchbook Playlist, enjoy!
Sustained Investigation (60% of exam score) For all three portfolios, students will submit images and writing to document their inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision:
15 digital images that include works of art and design and process documentation.
Typed responses to prompts, providing information about the questions that guided their investigation and how they practiced, experimented, and revised, guided by their questions.
Selected Works (40% of exam score) For all three portfolios, students will submit works of art and design and writing to demonstrate skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas:
For AP 2-D Art and Design and AP Drawing: 5 physical works or high-quality reproductions of physical works with written responses on paper describing the materials, processes, and ideas used.
For AP 3-D Art and Design: Digital images of 5 works (2 views of each) with typed responses describing the materials, processes, and ideas used.
With the elimination of the Range of Approaches (Breadth) section of the current portfolios, your students can focus on in-depth, inquiry-based art and design making; on skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas; and on articulating information about their work.
These updates will better support inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to document their sustained investigation of materials, processes, and ideas through practice, experimentation, and revision. The updated portfolios will be open to diverse approaches to thinking and making, aligning with college, university, and contemporary disciplinary practices.
This week in Studio Art we will learn how to create Paper Box Origami. We will again begin by designing paper like the swatches of Japanese paper below with repeating patterns that are colorful and creative.
After the paper is created we will learn how to fold the paper into a box with 2 sheets. Below is a box I created as an example and the video above shows you the process of folding.
It is the Last Week of Quarter 3 so make sure all assignments are up to date and handed in. Friday is the end of the marking period and no work can be handed in afterwards.
