Studio Art: Henri Matisse's Woman with a Hat

This week we will take on the challenge of recreating a master painting in Studio Art class and will create a version of Henri Matisse's famous fauvist portrait of the Woman with a Hat. The image is one of the paintings we studied last week and is on the Quizlet.  Try to recreate the painting using watercolor and pencil as close to the original as possible.

National Art Honor Society- Artist Trading Cards

 This week in National Art Honor Society we will be creating Artist Trading Cards to trade with AP Art and National Art Honor Society Students in Idaho and Wisconsin.  The cards should be 2.5" x 3.5" and the subject matter and medium is up to you!

 Here's a few examples of ATCs from the past few years, we will also be taking a photo with our final Wyland painting which was submitted last week and working on creating homemade holiday cards for our Adopt a Family program!

Extra Credit: Inktober

This month's Extra Credit assignment for painting, studio art, and AP art class is to participate in a full week of Inktober.  The image above gives the basics but also tag me in the images with @TimNeedles and #Needlesclass so I can see them.  Below is a demo of my first work for the theme of Swift by drawing and painting author Johnathan Swift.

AP Art: Advanced Layering Technique

In AP Art we are currently working on Advanced Layering Technique using mixed media.  The vine above is a time-lapse video of my demonstration from last week so you want to build a complex surface using different media and personal elements.  The final piece will be due on Thursday but remember to submit you art work to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards by the due date on Wednesday as well!

Studio Art: Acrylic Painting Techniques

In Studio Art class we are now beginning to work on painting using acrylics and here are a few important tips for shading and working with colors that you should see before you begin.  Be sure to arrange you palette using the primary colors like a color wheel and remember the paint drys fast so don't use too much on your palette because its wasteful.  You have one week to create the painting of the skeleton, make sure you stay on schedule and don't fall behind also extra help is Wednesday if you need extra time!

School's Out

Today is the last day of school so I thought I would end by sharing some of the final watercolor assignment in painting class as a tree is symbolic for life and growth among other things.  Above are three paintings by Taylor,  Sabrina, and Brenna from the art courtyard outside my classroom.

Congratulations to all the seniors who graduated yesterday and best of luck in the future and to all my students I remind you to go forward with an open mind and remember that "everyday in another opportunity to be creative"!
